Hisotry of CSJ Part I

In April 1961, Japanese Emperor Hirohito celebrated his 60th birthday, and in honor of this occasion, Dr. Isabella Gordon of the British Museum of Natural History was invited to Japan for a face-to-face discussion with Hirohito at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. The meeting was attended by several Japanese carcinologists, including Professors Tsune Sakai (Yokohama National University) and Itsuwo Kubo (Tokyo University of Fisheries), as well as Dr. Yo K. Okada, Director of the National Science Museum, Tokyo.

This conversation led to the formation of the Carcinological Society of Japan, which aimed to promote the study of crustacean biology and foster collaboration among carcinologists.

Prof. T. Sakai was elected President, Dr. Gordon was the first honorary member, and Drs. Yo Kaname Okada and Tamao Fukui were appointed as scientific advisers.

The first annual meeting of the society was held at the marine laboratory of Yokohama National University in December 1961 and was attended by 40 members.

The first volume of the official journal "Researches on Crustacea" was issued in 1963. The journal was irregularly published during the first 14 years and annually since 1979.

The society's newsletter, "Nihon Koukakurui Gakkai News" (News from Carcinological Society of Japan ) was first published in November 1972.

This was succeeded by "CANCER".

Since 1962, many carcinologists from various countries around world visited the society to discuss collaboration and to collect material, including: Jacques Forest (France), Jocelyn Crane (U.S.A), John Philip Harding (U.K.), H. S. Kim (Korea), R. Serene (Singapore), L.B. Holthuis (Netherlands), John Shrader Garth (U.S.A.), F.M. Bayer (U.S.A.), M. Tuerkay (Germany) and T. Wolff (Denmark).

In 1987, after the passing away of Prof. T. Sakai, Dr. Sadayoshi Miyake, Professor Emeritus of Kyushu University, was elected the second President of the Society.

In 1993, Prof. Keiji Baba was appointed the editor of the society's journal and was renewed, the name being changed to "Crustacean Research".

Special numbers of CR have also been published irregularly since 1982. Recent volumes include "Biology of Anomura II" edited by Akira Asakura, which is the Proceedings volume of the symposium organized by Rafael Lemaitre and Christopher Tudge, in Sixth International Crustacean Congress, Glasgow, Scotland. Other back issues include "William Stimpson's Journal from the North Pacific Exploring Expedition, 1853-1856" by Raymond B. Manning, Rafael Lemaitre, and Ronald S. Vasile.

The annual meeting is continuously held in various parts of Japan, and generally attended by 100 to 150 people.
